Text complexity, age by age.

Think of text complexity as how a book is written, not what it is about. It is the difference between the style of the writing and the actual topic. Usually, as school subjects get harder, the writing gets more complex too, but that is not always the case. A book can have big, deep ideas even if the sentences are short and easy to read.

Below Level 01, complexity works differently. Before children can decode, difficulty lives in what the reader does with the text, not in how the text is written. Levels 00a–00c describe the reading task. Levels 01 and up describe the writing.

  1. One noun per page — the word names exactly what the picture shows
  2. Keep text placement identical on every page so the child learns where print lives
  3. Choose words the child already says aloud — oral vocabulary comes before print vocabulary
  4. No sentence required: 'Dog.' is a complete text
  5. If adding a second word, make it a size or color adjective: 'Big dog.'
  6. Never place text on top of the image
  7. Use real photographs when the concept is concrete

  1. Write one stem and never vary it: 'I see a ___.'
  2. Change only the final word, and only to something unmistakably pictured
  3. Space words widely enough for a small finger to point to each one
  4. Cap the whole book at 5–8 unique non-slot words
  5. The last page may break the pattern once for a satisfying ending: 'I see... ME!'
  6. No contractions; no pronouns except I
  7. The child should be able to 'read' the book after two adult read-alouds

  1. State the letter set at the top of the text and never use a word outside it
  2. Prioritize decodability over natural-sounding prose — 'Sam sat' beats 'Sam sat down'
  3. Repeat each new CVC word at least 3 times across the book
  4. Use a rebus image for any unavoidable non-decodable noun
  5. Names are powerful: build character names from the letter set (Sam, Pam, Tim, Pat)
  6. Keep sight words to 2–3 per book, pre-taught before reading
  7. Sentences may feel stilted — that is the point at this level

  1. Stay within the sight words and letter-sounds already taught — the top 100 sight words are the ceiling, not the floor
  2. One idea per sentence; never combine two actions
  3. Keep ALL sentences under 5 words (e.g., 'The dog ran fast.')
  4. Vary the sentence pattern within a page — the child no longer needs an identical stem to track print
  5. Pair every noun with an illustration cue when possible
  6. Stick to present tense exclusively
  7. Avoid pronouns — use the noun name every time

  6. Use 'and' to connect two related ideas — avoid other conjunctions
  7. Write each paragraph around a single image or moment

  3. Include dialogue to break up narrative and reveal character

  5. Define new words within the sentence: 'The cocoon, a silky case, hung from the branch.'
  6. Use simple past tense consistently for narrative
  7. Introduce basic cause-effect: 'It rained, so we stayed inside.'
